Researchers believe they may have uncovered the cause of brain freeze. According to a study presented at the 2012 Experimental Biology meeting, icy cold beverages sipped through a straw cause an artery behind the eyes to dilate. The dilation places pressure on surrounding nerves, causing than familiar “brain pain.” So, exercise caution when slurping up your icy cold refreshments – sip slowly to prevent the rush of blood and avoid the major sting that follows.
